While there are no good weather effects and the ones you get are random, they can't really destroy your game like event cards could, unless you let them get completely out of control. When you visit adventures with weather effects, you then find out what negative effect happens (sometimes nothing). Weather effects are new to this expansion and there are many ways adventure cards can gain them (one of them being the day track). The more days that go by, the harder it gets because of weather effects. You have to decide as a group when the best time is to move forward. So you can't just sit in phase I all game because you'll never get the Elder Signs needed to win. I like it because it puts a timer on the game other than just the doom track. There is a day track with this expansion. Once you feel like you're ready, you can proceed to phase II by completing a couple of special adventure cards. (Side note: This could be a problem in Gates of Arkham because you could get unlucky at the start of the game and draw a bunch of hard adventure cards). During this phase, you're guaranteed not to run into any really difficult adventure cards. In the first phase, your goal is to stock up on supplies (you need them for various things in the game such as avoiding negative effects or gaining items - it starts hurting your stamina if you run out of them), items and allies. In this expansion, there are two phases to the game. Again, a neat addition, but being locked out of adventures and being forced to do nasty Other World cards when you're not equipped could be frustrating. Again, they were a neat addition in Gates of Arkham, but more often than not, they would end up costing you the game in the long run. It keeps the important facedown card aspect from Gates of Arkham and makes it less random. Now with Omens of Ice, it's perfect in my opinion.
There's just a lot of variables to worry about. Overall, we love the expansion and still would recommend the purchase. Or event cards, which were also introduced in this expansion, could turn a good game into a bad one pretty much instantaneously.ĭon't get me wrong. If the Other World was a nasty one that you're having a hard time completing and the locked out adventure card has a nasty midnight effect, you're in a whole lot of trouble. Gates lockout adventures until you do the corresponding Other World. The game could spiral out of control quickly, even if you weren't failing very many adventures. Even though we welcomed the harder challenge, sometimes it felt a little unfair. Not knowing what you're walking into adds a lot of much needed difficulty and tension to the game.Įven though we love it, we found it to be too challenging sometimes. Instead of having adventure cards faceup, they're facedown and it increases the difficulty of the game exponentially. It just feels it's the way Elder Sign was meant to be played.
Gates of Arkham set Elder Sign on the right path. I think it's a great mechanic and I'm happy to see it has been carried on in future expansions. Unseen Forces came along and didn't change the game, but added a great mechanic: Blessings and Curses. As a newer player though, you can absolutely lose, since you don't know the game as well, and you're not able to judge an adventure card's difficulty as well as someone who has played it a lot. It would get to a point unless you made a mistake, you would win almost every time (unless the dice really hated you). What I meant was if you are a veteran of the game, you know all the ins and outs, what to do and what not to do, when to use clues, when to use extra dice, when to use spells. As in it was nearly impossible to lose if you didn't make stupid decisions.Įdit: I didn't mean any offense by saying stupid decisions. The only problem was it was way too easy to win. I love the Cthulhu mythology theme, love the dice, love the art, just love everything about it. I've been a massive fan of Elder Sign since its release. Because it's been out for two months already, I don't want to do a full-length review or anything, but just wanted to share my thoughts.
