“I think it’s kind of the recording heart and soul of a lot of the important and relevant music that’s come out of North Carolina in the last 10 years, which is why it was a big goal for me to get there and actually make my record there,” Cook says. But while label and PR descriptions, and even the insightful essay by Cook’s wife, Heather, vaguely refer to the location of those sessions as, “a studio in the Blue Ridge Mountains,” Cook himself makes it no secret that the mystery site is Echo Mountain Studios. The show also marked just more than a year since he had recorded his newest album in Asheville. That date coincided with the decade anniversary of moving from Wisconsin to Durham so that Cook could immerse himself in the N.C.

The latest step on this Tar Heel odyssey is a return to The Mothlight Thursday, Jan. Check out Relix‘s recent feature on The Wood Brothers: A Little Bit Sweet.Phil Cook’s Southland Mission is thoroughly a North Carolina album, so much so that at any of the junctures in its creation when it seemed he would exit the state, he was promptly pulled back in. Listen to “Soul Of This Town” here, or below. We recorded what we thought would be a demo of the song, but it turned out we loved having captured our first performance together and it felt special enough to keep and release.” He got excited and wrote a few verses too, and by the time we got to the studio it didn’t take us long to flesh it out and perform it live together. He didn’t have lyrics, but he did reference Bob Dylan’s ‘Nashville Skyline’ and mentioned the present day rapid growth of Nashville, cranes everywhere and the face of the town changing with every visit,” Wood continued. “I loved Phil’s ideas and thought about Nashville, and then thought more universally about a lot of cities where gentrification is not only changing the look of the place, but displacing so many people… I immediately wrote a few verses and a chorus and sent it back to Phil. The week before he came he sent me chords and a melody he had. “A few months later Phil was coming through Nashville and we booked a few hours in the studio. “We didn’t know each other then, but when a mutual friend introduced us, we hit it off immediately, and made plans to write together.” The first time I heard Phil’s music I knew right away I wanted to sing and play with him,” recalled Wood (via press release). “‘Soul Of This Town’ is a full-on collaboration with my friend Phil Cook. In addition, Wood’s son Kieran provides horns for the song, marking the father-son duo’s first recorded collaboration.Īccording to a press release, Wood and Cook began working on the single over a year ago, “but the downtime created by the pandemic gave them each the space in their individual schedules to complete the song.” Wood was preparing to tour to promote The Wood Brothers’ record Kingdom In My Mind, but those plans were nixed due to coronavirus. The Wood Brothers’ Oliver Wood has shared his first ever solo release, a single called “Soul Of This Town.” The song was co-written and recorded with singer-songwriter Phil Cook.
